What is the Difference Between a Directory and a Search Engine?
There is a big difference between a Directory and a Search Engine. Search Engines use software that send out robots, or bots, to search, check and measure web pages. Directories do not send out bots. They cannot read information on a page. They read the information about a page such as the site title, meta tags, and where your site is on the web. Directories are human verified and checked.
Can you believe there are still people checking Blog URLs when you submit them? Yes there are! These patient people run Directories, but do not laugh yet, they can be a good source of traffic to your Blog. Traffic is something we all love. Hey, if I have to submit my Blog site to a Directory for extra traffic I will do it.
I remember when I first got indexed by Google. I did not submit my site to Google instead I made articles , spread them out around the web, with a link pointing back to my site. This is the way I got listed and indexed by the Search Engine. Its very different for a Directory where you have to submit manually, then wait for a person to approve it, very different.
The Original Search Optimization
Before Google came along Yahoo was the leader in Search Engine Optimization with its Directory way of storing web pages. Then Google entered the Search Engine Game and dominated the market with their new approach to Search Engine Optimization.
But do not dismiss human created directories entirely. In fact if you get listed in Dmoz ( Open Directory Project ) Google can increase your Google pagerank as it values Dmoz as a feeder system.
Why Submit To Directories?
Well the answer is more traffic. Better pagerank and more visitors are good enough reasons to include Directory submission as part of my overall Search Engine Optimization plan. David Risley, A full time Blogger, has some great tips on getting more traffic to your Blog.
