Near my home lives an 86 year old man. He is not your usual pensioner. He walks his dog everyday, sometimes twice a day, cooks dinner for his daughter who visits him and keeps him company. I was walking behind him one month ago and observed him very closely. I took note of his posture, his ease of movement, his speed, and his athleticism and vitality would make any thirty year old man proud. HE IS ONE FIT DUDE was the thought that ran through my mind.

He is one of the fortunate minority. What makes someone live to an old age and can let them walk miles without fatigue, drive a car safely, and sleep for eight hours without any help from unnatural substances? I think he is a fine example, bless him, and he inspires my walking program.

I wonder if he is going to beat the Century mark. I hope he does. He has achieved one of the dreams of many seniors and that is staying healthy during the latter years. I walked past him just last week, stopped next to him, and announced to him, “You walk like a thirty year old man!”

“I wish,” he replied beaming back at me with a big smile. He told me he was 86 years of age. The age impressed me. Then I got a little more serious.

“You are a great example to all the seniors that live around here,” I said, ” They can all learn from your healthy habits.” We talked for a few minutes more. I hope I made his day. Many Seniors are shown little respect these days. They are either carted off to a retirement home to be out of the way or left all alone in their dwelling, often without visitors for months on end. This is not a society for the elderly. It makes me sad.
