Feeling the pain of animals is not an easy thing to do. Animal cruelty, and treating them like just some object, instead of a living being in its own right is the way it is these days. When you can feel the pain of someone else you can only handle it for a while then it becomes hard to take. It is much easier and simpler to bury your head in the sand, like an ostrich, and ignore the problem.
Unfortunately this is not a very good long term solution as one very essential point is forgotten. It is called karma. In this age of Kali Yuga, which translated means the age of ignorance, metaphysical principles are usually not the topic of discussion at the dinner table. Many folks understand people to people karma. People to animal interactions are karmic. People to the planet earth interactions are also karmic.
I remember when first learning about karma my head started to swim! Every action on earth has an equal and opposite reaction. This includes people, our mother earth, Gaia, and our animal friends. Human and animal karma is linked and one influences the other. By hurting animals we are hurting ourselves. If we sow the wind, we will reap the whirlwind.
The sacred Buddhists texts state that if we inflict suffering upon others we in return shall receive suffering. Someone who is fully conscious treads softly , with respect, and honor for all living things. A prime mistake is to think that we as humans are the most superior species in the universe. There are celestial beings that carry much more light than humans. If we walk the path of compassion and peace there is a very good chance we will be like them one day.
