Walking down the street this week I bumped into an old friend. My family knew him ten years ago and he often used to visit.

I stopped walking and paused for a moment with him to pay my respects and to say hello. When you meet people you encounter two tings. First is the social mask people present to you by society.

Secondly it is how much of their inner essence, the real part of the individual, they allow to come through to the surface.

Draining Conversation

He began the conversation by asking me how I was and how the rest of the family is doing. I replied politely, “Fine thank you.”

Then he went on to point out flaws in character, slowly at first, of each family member. I quietly listened but found my mind disagreeing with everything he said. I kept my thoughts private.

Attacking What is Close to You

“Your brother does this,” he said, ” And your mother does that,” he continued. I could feel myself getting heavy with each word he uttered.

He paused for a moment and talked about his bad health and associated troubles. Listening to him further my energy was flowing away fast by his draining presence. I left as soon as I could.

You Want to Be Good- but Danger Awaits

You have to be careful of old friends. Their presence is often draining. I ended up on the couch, totally drained, with the life sucked out of me.

Many start out on the road of personal development and some give up shortly after. In the first stages of any self empowerment there is often little support from family and friends. This is when you have to be strong and continue onwards.

The beginning stages of self empowerment are lonely. Only later when you get on a bit do you find people with similar interests.

Sooner or Later You will Find Real Friends

It is great to have friends with the same positive lifestyle habits as you do. This is when the journey begins to get exciting and fun.
