Changing bad habits into more fruitful ones can go a long way towards having a new and great career. It will give you confidence and is very empowering when you transform from a negative activity to a positive one.


How to stop bad habits is something we can seriously think about. The trouble with our bad habits is that they take up so much energy. This creative energy could be used for other more empowering activities like changing into a more meaningful job, or pursuing a hobby you love and have a sincere interest in, and by stopping the bad habit this extra energy then becomes available to you.



First Step to Break Bad Habits

I learn from everyone I meet. The road of getting better, and learning good things, never ends. I began my quest in this field, the area of personal development, back in 1998 when I had my near death experience. Yes, I went to the other side, the side you go to after one dies, and came back, in one piece but with a totally different outlook on life.


Breaking a bad habit is not easy. We cannot fool ourselves. Habits have a power over us and drive us into a certain way of acting that is far from pleasing and can even disgust us. It is part of the human experience to suffer and taste pain, as Buddha said life is full of suffering, and we are all aware of this.


But let us say you want to accomplish something worthwhile in your home, as a parent with family, or even upgrade your career to something better, the fact is your bad habit can block your path.


The key is to accept ourselves warmly and be aware of our defects. Then changing bad habits into good can happen. We know we are not perfect but we wish for something better. It is a self realization. A part of the process of personal transformation into something better than before.


You know those kinds of folks that think they know everything? Sure you do! You know someone like that, I know someone like that, we all know someone like that, but their minds are closed like a book that never opens. These kinds never learn anything and the chance of them changing a bad habit into a good one is NIL.


The first step to stop bad habits is to begin to declutter our minds and throw out anything that does not serve us. It is not easy in the beginning because the habit has a strong hold upon us but we can make a start in the right direction.


Here are some suggestions on how to stop bad habits.


Small Steps. There is no such thing as a get quick rich scheme. But it is possible to build a great career over time by taking small, consistent, steps every day. Do something for thirty minutes each day and watch your energy and accomplishment build.


Learning Curve. We have to begin with love and nurturing in our hearts. This is a good idea because when undertaking any new activity there is a learning curve that needs to happen. Do you want to stop drinking, stop biting fingernails, or how about stop smoking? These are examples. For any of these stop actions to happen there is a learning curve that must happen first.


A learning curve takes time and energy. You can get off to a good start and you also need energy to finish. It is easy to begin something but to maintain momentum is the hard part and this is why so many do not begin to change bad habits into good ones in the first place. The task seems overwhelming. I like the the small step technique, breaking a task down into small bite sized pieces, and it works.


Mechanical Habits. The understanding of the mechanical nature of our habits and how they were formed in the first place is a step towards freedom and transformation.


Years ago I did some jazz dancing lessons. I remember how hard in the beginning I had to focus my mind, my conscious awareness, and give my attention to the dance instructor. I had to focus really hard. My next action was to clumsily reproduce the movements of the dance during the class. It was a struggle for several attempts. Eventually I mastered the movements of the jazz dance routine.


To my amazement after a while these movements became automatic, I could reproduce them at will, without thinking much about them at all. I breathed a huge sigh of relief. What happened is the dance routine passed from my intellectual center, my brain that was struggling with a new dance pattern to learn, to my body which recorded the movements in entirety just like an old fashioned tape recorder.


This is a key to understanding how habits are formed for both the good and bad ones. A habit is not natural in the beginning. All habits are learned and if they are learned there is a possibility they can become unlearned.


Begin a Positive Habit. This method involves beginning something new and positive while forgetting about the negative habit. Before you know it the new habit has replaced the old destructive habit. For example your objective is to stop drinking alcohol now. You have the understanding that too much booze is damaging your physical health but the mechanical habit has its hold over you. You are trapped by this formidable opponent in the form of your dark side represented by your disgusting drinking habit. But you still wish to change for the better and it is a noble aim to have such a wish.


Your decide the best course of action is to begin drinking large quantities of herbal teas. This is the basis of your new healthy beverage habit. You visit the local health food shop and select a small range of various herbal teas. Peppermint, chamomile, and licorice are your herbal teas of choice.
