Dedication To Seniors

Here is a dedication to seniors,

Allow me to introduce Phyllis, aka me Mum,
I am very proud of this woman, here is why,

Phyllis was born in Greece on the island of Kythera, she left home at the age of seventeen and arrived in Australia , alone, with only a suitcase.

The end of world war two saw the beginning of a massive migration boom in Australia. Many from Europe circa 1945 dreamed of living in one of three countries being the USA, Canada, or Australia. Each country held a vision of a brand new start far away from the ravages of World War Two and Hitler’s madness.

There was stacks of work in Australia when the war was over. All you needed was a keen attitude and a willingness to work.

Resumes? No way. You used the affirmation: I want a job, do you have a vacancy sir? For many a boss this was enough to get you the job.
Computers? You only found them at universities and research institutes.
Drugs? Coffee, aspirin, and alcohol. That was it.

Mum got work right away. Several years later she got married.

She was a good householder. The family was short of nothing when growing up.

I learned a lot from Mum. Values like hard work and looking after yourself. Fairness was important to her always. She gave out more than she got back in life, maybe she will get some kind of reward in heaven.

She grew up on a farm with plenty of natural foods and common sense. She would repeat some of her little sayings often during all kinds of events and life experiences. It amazed me how apt her little remarks fit the situation at the time.

Here are some of her sayings written in stone upon my memory,

> It takes two to tango, always look at the other person’s point of view.
> Forgive often, you might have done the same in identical circumstances.
> For peace to happen in the family home, it must be inside of you.
> If you want the bank to be your friend, pay your bills on time.
> Never rush into a project, the exit is more difficult than the entry.
> Love your enemies as your brothers, life it too short to be fighting.

Mum has turned eighty years of age this year. She has had a good life and looked after her family well.

Now in old age she finds it a struggle to walk with extreme pain. She has arthritis in her hands and feet, and lost a lot of calcium in her spine which made her spinal discs shrink in size.

I dedicate this post to Mum, and all seniors like her, for their contribution and the way we live, and for their good sense.
